lying to you.

Not "a bit imprecise." Not "roughly fine if you're careful." Lying — to the tune of over double the correct amount, in a real study, with a device someone actually owns.

What a measuring cup actually does

The range of individual accuracy across 100 dog owners measuring ¼, ½ and 1 cup of dry food with three ordinary devices — a graduated scoop, a liquid measuring cup, and a dry measuring cup. Error was significantly worse with the smallest volumes — precisely the amounts you'd measure for a dog that's supposed to be losing weight — and significantly different by device. The authors' own recommendation: use a gram scale.

This study was funded by Royal Canin, a pet-food manufacturer.We're telling you that up front rather than hoping you don't notice. Here's why it doesn't change our conclusion: this is peer-reviewed research published in the Veterinary Record, and its finding — that cups and scoops are wildly inaccurate — is independently corroborated by a second, unrelated study below. A pet-food company funding research that tells owners to measure more precisely is not a company protecting a lie. We'd rather you know who paid for the study and trust our numbers anyway, than have you find out later and trust nothing we say.

Then a second study
said it again.

Eight years earlier, a completely separate research group ran essentially the same test and landed on the same conclusion. Owners using measuring cups to portion extruded dry kibble were accurate to somewhere between an 18% under-estimateand an 80% over-estimate. Each owner's own error was fairly consistent from scoop to scoop — this isn't random noise, it's a stable habit built around the wrong tool, repeated at every single meal.

Two independent, peer-reviewed studies. A decade apart. Different countries, different research groups, different owners, different cups. Same answer.

What that actually
does to a dog.

Take a healthy 15 kg dog. Not overweight — just an ordinary dog, at maintenance, on an ordinary food. The same resting-energy formula the calculator uses everywhere else on this site gives:

That's the worst single measurement recorded in the study, not a typical owner's daily experience — shown honestly as the ceiling, not the average. Even at German 2011's worst recorded figure instead (+80%), the same dog is still overfed by roughly598 kcal every day —≈218,000 kcal across a year.

We could tell you how many kilos that becomes. We're not going to. No source in our own research gives a defensible calories-to-kilos-of-fat conversion for a dog, and we'd rather leave that number out entirely than invent one just to make this page scarier than the studies actually support. The excess-kilocalorie figure alone is already the entire point — it's real, it's sourced, and it happens to the same dog, with the same cup, every single day of the year.

A scale doesn't
have this problem.

Both studies land on the same recommendation: weigh the food. A kitchen scale reads in grams with no interpretation required, no scoop shape to misjudge, no "roughly level" guesswork. It is also, not coincidentally, the entire premise of this tool — read the bag's calorie density, compute the grams, weigh it out.
